This morning (28th April 2026) at around 8:25am, my mother received a call from 0112 616 927 claiming to be HNB. The caller said they were going to close her credit card and asked for her full name to “confirm” it. When she said she doesn’t have any HNB accounts, they then asked for her NIC number. The moment she asked how she could verify they were actually from HNB, they hung up.
I called HNB’s official hotline to check. They confirmed:
🔴 That number does not belong to HNB
🔴 HNB does not begin such operations before 9:00am
🔴 HNB will never directly ask for your full NIC over the phone
What made this especially alarming is how convincing it was. The call sounded very human, with real background noise. These scammers are either using advanced AI voice technology or operating as a very organized group. It is getting harder to tell the difference.
Scam calls like this are on the rise. Please stay alert and protect your loved ones, especially those who may not be aware of these tactics.
✅ Never share your NIC, full name, card details, or OTPs with anyone who calls you unexpectedly
✅ Always hang up and call the official bank hotline to verify
✅ If in doubt, hang up
